Visuality and Power: Communication, Politics, and Social Representations is a collective volume that offers a deep and contemporary analysis of the role images play in shaping political power and communication dynamics in the twenty-first century. Through five essays written by researchers from diverse backgrounds, the book explores how visualities—ranging from memes to official state broadcasts—shape subjectivities, influence public opinion, and become tools of both domination and resistance.
The chapters examine phenomena such as algorithm-driven disinformation and post-truth; racial representation and power tensions surrounding the figure of Francia Márquez in televised events; counter-visuality in protests against ICE raids; the symbolic agency of Indigenous youth within the CRIC; and the construction of fear as a political narrative in Donald Trump’s anti-migrant discourse.
With an interdisciplinary approach that combines visual studies, political communication, technopolitics, and decolonial perspectives, the book invites readers to reflect on how we see and how we are seen in an era dominated by screens, platforms, and contested visual discourses. It is a timely and necessary contribution to understanding the symbolic challenges of our mediatized democracies.
