Epistemology of Communication: Knowledge construction and contemporary transformations
Synopsis
This chapter examines the epistemology of communication as a field in continuous transformation, highlighting its evolution from information-transmission models to perspectives that understand communication as a symbolic, cultural, and social process. Through dialogue with classical and contemporary theorists, the text questions the scientific status of communication and emphasizes its role in knowledge construction, subjectivity, and social interaction. It also explores applications in professional, educational, and scientific contexts, as well as the challenges posed by the digital era—particularly within Web 2.0 environments, where communication becomes interactive, decentralized, and participatory. The chapter concludes that communication does not merely transmit information but actively shapes identities, meanings, and social dynamics, underscoring the need for a critical and multidisciplinary epistemological approach
