Synopsis

This chapter examines the impact of media and digital communication on Ecuadorian society in the context of artificial intelligence, understood as a disruptive force that reshapes social, political, and cultural dynamics. From a critical theoretical perspective, communication is analyzed not merely as information transmission but as a process that shapes perceptions, identities, and social practices, particularly through social media and algorithmic systems. The chapter addresses issues such as misinformation, fake news, social polarization, and algorithmic personalization of content, highlighting the ethical and democratic risks involved. At the same time, it acknowledges the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence to democratize access to information, promote inclusion, and strengthen intercultural communication in Ecuador. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for media literacy, regulatory frameworks, and the ethical use of artificial intelligence to advance the common good and citizen participation
